The Sankofa Auction Project
A JusRé Community Arts Auction Series

"Nothing says 'hope' like planting a seed." -Duron Chavis

The What

In the West African tradition of the Akan people of Ghana, "Sankofa" honors the spirit of reaching back to experiences of the past to connect to the present.  In essence, we look to lessons we've learned when we were younger and apply them to the "here and now." This project is my chance to use my artwork and art therapy experiences to embody Sankofa. I hope to use this platform to feature and strengthen the groups and individuals who've sown seeds in my life and in those of the community at large.

The Why

I've been blessed to receive lots of favor and support from many village members on my journey. I've been able to create artwork, sell portraits, create murals, work with students to create murals, to lead paint parties, teach high schoolers, engage clients in art therapy, and even paint live during worship services and wedding receptions. I have created lots of art that hasn't even been posted on social media! My cup runneth over. This is a chance for me to take the 'run-off' from my cup and spread some love.

The List

I am selecting a variety of community entities to feature in this series. I'm starting small but leaving room to have this grow into something bigger than me. I'm beginning with a few organizations who've nurtured me and the mighty village that uplifts the community without much recognition.

The Process

  • I'll share the featured organization

  • I'll post the artwork up for grabs through the auction

  • The auction will run for a designated time period

  • The auction will close

  • The winner will pay for the artwork through a separate and secure link

  • I will arrange drop-off or shipment of artwork

  • I will donate the auction proceeds to the featured organization (minus a minimal amount to cover materials, creation costs and shipping)

  • I will reflect on the process, assess feedback and repeat the process with the next organization
